Media Covered Twitter A Bit More Than Facebook In 2011

Posted by David Cohen  at AllFacebook:
Twitter edged out Facebook for the crown of most media coverage for a social network in 2011, according to HighBeam Research.
HighBeam found that Twitter accounted for nearly 50 percent of social network mentions in the media, with Facebook close behind, at 45 percent.
On a monthly basis, the only months when Facebook topped Twitter were February, when the larger social network rolled out a new layout for pages, and April, when deals expanded.
Sister blog Inside Facebook pointed out that February was also the month of the massive protests in Egypt, while April brought news about Facebook’s legal headaches from the Winklevoss twins and Paul Ceglia.
Other social networks barely registered, with Google Plus not included due to its June debut. The share of coverage for these others was:
  • LinkedIn, 3.33 percent
  • Myspace,1.3 percent
  • Foursquare, .71 percent
Readers: Do you recall seeing more media mentions of Facebook or Twitter over the past year?
